Description: Michael Rader was honored as mastersmith June 2010. Over the years, he has gained a reputation for his exquisite woodworking skills, which truly sets him apart from other knifemakers. This wakizashi was made in the spring of 2005, when Rader was still an ABS Apprentice. It has been kept in a private collection since it was made and by all appearances Michael could have made it yesterday!
Bladesmith Michael Rader created this exceptional Japanese influenced Wakizashi. The long, sleek blade was hand forged to shape from 1084 carbon steel and features a meticulous hand satin finish. A long fuller runs along the length of each side of the blade.
The tsuba is formed from stainless steel and has a crop circle motif that was a hallmark of Michael's work at the time. The handle is formed from curly maple (Acer saccharum) and accented with South American mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). Michael's experience as a woodworker is clearly visible in his precision fit and finish. The mahogany has been filed to create a secure, comfortable grip. A mosaic pin finishes out the handle.
The wooden saya is formed from matching curly maple and also has accents in South American mahogany. The saya has absolutely perfect friction fit and will protect the blade during storage. An exceptional knife with great fit and finish.
This Japanese influenced wakizashi was featured in the Oct. 2005 issue of Blade Magazine on page 40.
