Description: South African knifemaker, Jan Wahl, is a maker to watch. He became a full time knife maker in 2009 and joined the South African Knife Makers Guild in 2012. Jan has excellent attention to detail. He recently started making folders and the results have been incredible.
The hand rubbed satin finished blade is formed from N690 stainless steel, created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds on to it. Increased toughness gives it better resistance to edge chipping. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. The spine of the knife has been hand fileworked to create a secure thumb purchase. A large choil allows you to choke up for more delicate tasks.
The blade is easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous flipper toggle. It uses a caged bearing pivot system that creates exceptional action with no blade play. Disengage the locking liner and the blade drops shut effortlessly.
The handle is made from black G-10 and features thuya burl (Tetraclinis articulata) wood inlays. Thuya burl is native to the Atlas Mountain regions of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in Northwest Africa. Thuya wood was highly praised by Romans and Greeks, and its oils were used in religious rituals and ceremonies for centuries. High demand over the centuries has greatly reduced the Thuya forests and increased its rarity. Looking for underground thuya burls has been compared to sifting through sand for grains of gold. Wood inlaid scales elegantly contrast against bronze anodized and fileworked liners. A black G-10 backbar provides plenty of strength to keep the knife sturdy. A black G-10 pivot collar surrounds the custom pivot. The anodized titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-handed, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
