Description: This Trigger Guard Bowie was created by Mike Shindel of Blade and Hammer Custom Knives. Mike believes strongly in hand forging and sole authorship. Everything is done in house -- from forging, grinding and heat treating the blade, to making the sheath. Shindel has an excellent sense of design and an exceptional fit and finish. This knife won Best Damascus at the 2017 Southern California Blades Knife Expo Show! The award plaque from the show is included with the knife.
The large flat ground blade is forged to shape from layers of 1095 and 15n20 carbon steels. The resulting ladder pattern is well controlled and highly captivating. A long swedge runs along the top of the blade to reduce weight. A slight recurve in the edge increases cutting power. A clear differential heat treatment line runs along the edge separating the hard cutting edge from the soft support spine. This blade will make an excellent chopping knife!
The handle is made from gaboon ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) and has a bronze ferrule. A guard forged from mild steel into the shape of a trigger guard meets perfectly with the handle and has been antiqued to add an heirloom appearance. The handle is extremely comfortable and the ergonomics allow the index finger to rest comfortably inside the guard. To choke up during more delicate tasks the index finger can rest in the choil and the middle finger inside the guard. This is a knife you won't want to put down!
Mike included a black leather sheath to protect the knife during transportation.
Excellent work throughout!
