Description: Mareko Maumasi is creating some of the more exciting chef's knives that I have ever seen. He worked for years with Mastersmith Bob Kramer. It is no surprise that his understanding of kitchen knives as well as insight into working with steel is exceptional. His moniker is Maumasi Firearts. His friendship with Journeyman Smith David Lisch has helped push his knifemaking to the next level, as he has incorporated tremendously complex damascus into his repertoire.
Mareko forged the complex Zebra pattern mosaic damascus to have tremendous amounts of detail hidden in the steel. It is an organic pattern the immediately grabs attention and hold onto it.
The handle is formed from spalted maple burl. Two blue/green dyed sections surround the naturally toned wood. Both were stabilized so as to hold up well to the demanding world of a professional or home kitchen. The workmanship is beautiful, and the wood chosen is gorgeous! The convoluted whirlwind figure travels through the wood with black spalting lines throughout. The octagonal handle is based on one of the traditional handle styles and ensures a comfortable and safe grip. A front 'bolster' formed from copper nickel seals the handle.
A gorgeous piece built for serious use, yet among the more dramatic kitchen knives that I have come across. Despite its large size (9-1/8 inch blade length), this knife is very light and nimble!
