Description: This Dragonfly Pendant is a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry created by engraving and carving shibuichi. Shibuichi means "one-fourth" in Japanese and indicates the standard formulation of one part silver to four parts copper. Until the Meiji reforms (late 19th century) in Japan, when swordsmiths began to make purely decorative objects instead of swords, shibuichi was used to ornament various fittings for katana.
The pendant depicts a detailed dragonfly with a 24k gold body and inlaid .999 fine silver wings. The eyes, segments, and wings are very intricately engraved. The backing of the pendant is hand-forged .999 fine silver. This pendant clearly shows Tom's experience making netsuke (small sculptural objects, or toggles, usually worn to suspend objects hung from the sash of the kimono).
The pendant measures approximately 1 inch in diameter and is attached to a silver hanger. A 20 inch leather cord necklace is included.
