Description: This elegant kiridashi was created by Australian born knifemaker Glenn Waters. Glenn spent much of his adult life living in Japan, teaching martial arts and the influence of Japanese culture on his work is indisputable.
The san mai blade combines ZDP-189 PM stainless steel with ATS-34 stainless steel sides. ZDP-189 is a legendary steel in the knife industry. It takes an incredibly keen edge and holds it extremely well. The blade is hardened to Rc 67 (extremely hard). The relatively softer ATS-34 sides help cushion the center core.
The handle is wrapped in traditional Japanese style. Stingray skin is lacquered to a bright red and detailed in 24kt gold leaf. Green silk is meticulous wrapped around it and provides a sure, comfortable grip. Bolsters are formed from Timascus. This material, created by Tom Ferry and Chuck Bybee produces a bright 'damascus' forged from layers of titanium rather than steel.
The blade and pommel are both engraved. The left side of the blade and pommel feature detailed images of Japanese dragons, flying through the sky. The dragon is chasing a meteorite inlaid in 24kt gold. The right side of the blade shows a dragon approaching Fujin. In Japanese myth, Fujin is one of the oldest Shinto gods and is the god of wind. It is written that he was present at the creation of the world and when he first let the wind out of his bag, it cleared the morning mist and filled the space between the heavens and earth so that the sun would shine. The right pommel features Raijin, one of the gods of thunder. In some legends, it is written that Raijin and Fujin were originally demons that opposed the gods. Buddha ordered his army to capture them. Then after a great battle, the demons were captured and converted to the side of good. The satin finished flats of the blade are complemented by the 120,000 grit mirror polished grinds.
The knife is accompanied by a kydex sheath.
