Description: This exceptional set of knives celebrates the Big 5! Each of the knives features a theme: Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, and Cape Buffalo. This set, which took several years to create, was completed in 2001. It has been in a private collection and is in meticulous condition. By all appearances it could have been made today.
The blades are mirror polished ATS-34 stainless steel. Hollow grinds ensure that the blades would be easy to maintain if they were used. Handles are formed from mammoth ivory and were engraved by Connie Bellet. Connie, who has been scrimshawing for more than 30 years, specializes in capturing the natural beauty of Earth’s wild creatures. 416 stainless steel guards were meticulous hand engraved by Bruce Shaw. Left bolsters depict detailed images of the Big 5. Right bolsters are engraved in Western Scroll. Bruce is well known for his tremendous 3-dimensional deep engraving of wildlife.
The African Elephant knife features a 4 inch clip point blade. The left bolster features an elephant facing outward. An engraved elephant is shown across the background of the African savannah.
The African Rhino knife features a 4-1/2 inch trailing point blade. The left bolster features a side profile of a rhino. The scale in scrimshawed with a running rhino, dust raised by its feet.
The African Leopard knife features a 4 inch sway drop point blade. The left bolster features a side profile of a leopard looking outward. A leopard is depicted on the scale resting on a tree limb.
The African Lion knife features a clip point blade with a raised thumb ramp. Profiles of lions are shown hiding among tall grasses.
The Cape Buffalo knife features a drop point blade. Side profiles of this majestic beast gaze outward while chewing cud.
This is an amazing set and one of the highlights of Dennis Friedly's career. Each of the knife is accompanied by a walnut display stand.
