Description: This remarkable folder is the work of South African bladesmith Bertie Rietveld. Bertie is a true artisan knifemaker, a master of his craft with a genuine originality in his designs.
The blade is forged from Bertie's own dragonskin pattern damascus -- among Bertie's most famous patterns. The graceful arc of the carved blade gives the impression of a blade formed from two pieces of steel. Bertie has further emphasized this design by using both a polished finish in the grind and a matt finish in the ricasso area, making the same colors look much darker. The hot bluing technique Bertie uses produces a stronger coloring than nitre bluing and does not affect the heat treatment.
Picasso marble scales are set on titanium liners. They meet with stainless steel bolsters that have been masterfully engraved by Chris Booysen. This folder uses a unique locking mechanism called a "Bertie lock", whereby the base of the bolsters is gently pushed upward with the thumb, releasing the locked blade. This is a graceful design that requires extremely skilled construction with a great deal of finesse to perform correctly.
The engraved titanium pivot is inset with a Stanhope lens. This hallmark of Bertie's work reveals his logo when spied through. When you hold the lens up to a light you can see his logo as clearly as if the knife were illuminated from within. Exceptional work throughout!
