Description: Raymond Richard's designs have a timeless grace about them that comes from a family heritage of knifemaking and the inclusion of hard to find materials.
Ray began by forging the long blade from W2 carbon steel. During heat treating, Ray coated the spine of the knife with clay. This acts as a heat sink, and results in a soft supportive spine, with a keen, long lasting edge. This traditional Japanese technique produces a gently undulating heat treatment line called a gunome hamon. The blade is satin finished and antiqued.
The guard and butt are forged from wrought iron recovered from an 1800s era wagon wheel. A hammered finish accentuates the knife’s rustic, heirloom feel. The curly maple handle is comfortable in the hand and has warm tones with a repetitive 'curled' grain structure. Ray created a front ferrule by alternating leather with brass spacers. This assists the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. Accompanied by hand sewn leather sheath. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
