Description: There is something wonderfully primitive and yet playful in this piece. Mastersmith Hank Knickmeyer is well known for creating some of the most creative and detailed Damascus found anywhere. The blade was forged from three separate bars of steel. The spine section is an intricate example of Hank's "butterflies and flowers" pattern mosaic damascus. Hank's mark, "HK", is interspersed with butterfly and flower images along with many other detailed patterns. The edge bar is "Twist" pattern Damascus forged from 1086 and 15N20 carbon steels. This mixture results in an optimal carbon ratio, which in turn leads to an edge that holds up very well under use. A thin central bar is zipper welded to the edge bar for a very dramatic effect. The blade is completed with a Spanish notch.
A ferrule of pure silver leads into the walrus artifact handle. In 1800s Alaska, many fossil walrus ivory pieces were used as tools, ranging from fishing weights to sled runners, to fire starters. This handle, a fire starter used by the Inuit people, is one such piece. Colors in the fossil ivory range from rich cream to deep caramel with a touch of milk chocolate. Hank has retained the shape as much as possible. Exceptional work throughout!
