Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. This knife is truly a one-of-a-kind piece -- incorporating Jonny's arachnid pattern mosaic Damascus blade with exceptional carving of a Viking warrior.
Over the last several years, Jonny has been working with renowned Swedish Bladesmith Mattias Styrefors, learning the complex art of Damascus. Jonny had already set himself apart for his knifemaking, but wanted to be able to create exceptional sole-authorship work such as this. The result is stunning.
The blade was forged from Jonny's own steel and features swarms of mosaic damascus spiders. The spiders have tremendous detail. The blade was forged using a san mai technique -- whereby the center core of 20C carbon steel is revealed at the edge of the grinds.
The stacked handle begins with a cross cut section of fossil mammoth ivory. This cut reveals the intricate grain pattern inherent to the ancient ivory and the beautiful blue tones that developed over thousands of years from interactions with the minerals in the soil where it was buried. A section of musk ox horn is surrounded by thinner sections of stabilized box elder burl. A central layer of blond mammoth ivory was meticulously hand engraved in a traditional Sami motif (the pattern is not scrimshaw, it is hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder). The handle is completed with a section of fossil walrus ivory. This has been meticulously carved into a mask of a Viking warrior. Exceptional work throughout!
