Description: This dramatic hunting knife is the work of Charlie Bennica, who nurtures his passion for knives and knifemaking in the village of Moulès-et-Baucels in the south of France.
The blade steel was forged by renowned French bladesmith Dominique Bargiel using the traditional Japanese river sand technique. Literally, he begins with black river sand and refines this into steel. This steel, called Tamahagane (jewel steel) in Japan, creates the steel that has made Japanese swords world famous. After creating the steel, Bargiel forged it into 6000 layer Damascus steel. The blade was heat treated following the traditional Japanese clay method. This results in an ultra-hard edge with a softer, supportive spine. The handle is formed from two pieces of stabilized and dyed black poplar has been fit so superbly as to be virtually seamless. The handle shows a level of woodworking skill that I have rarely, if ever, seen rivaled. It is finished off with a matching Damascus butt cap. The grip swells slightly toward the center making this knife feel almost as if it is an extension of your hand and a true delight to hold. The amazing accompanying sheath is form fitted and hand made by Bennica’s wife, Chantal. A collector’s dream with exceptional fit and finishing throughout.
