Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. This knife is truly a one-of-a-kind piece -- with innovations such as Jonny's bent horn sheath ornament. The traditional Scandinavian pattern on the sheath is not scrimshaw, it is hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder. Reindeer horn throughout has been meticulously engraved. The front has a cutout that reveals a heat blued spider forged into mosaic Damascus. Masur birch burl brings tremendous warmth to the presentation.
In the last two years, Jonny has been working with renowned Swedish Bladesmith Mattias Styrefors, learning the complex art of Damascus. Jonny had already set himself apart for his knifemaking, but wanted to be able to create exceptional sole-authorship work such as this. The result is stunning.
The blade and sheath insets are both formed from Damascus that was meticulously forged by Jonny. The spiders have tremendous detail. The handle is very traditional for the Sami styled knife and has a slim oval shape that fits very comfortably into the hand. The reindeer antler in the handle has been highly polished and is nicely complemented by masur birch and engraving. The masur birch wood in the center of the handle has excellent grain structure and has a smooth oiled finish. The engraving on the sheath is particularly impressive. The interlocking pattern travels from the middle of the sheath to the base, with the pattern getting progressively smaller. Transitions in size are particularly difficult and few makers in the world achieve Jonny's perfection. Exceptional work throughout!
