Description: Coming back from the Blade show with mastersmith test knives is one of my great highlights of the year. In 2005, four new mastersmiths joined the ranks. Five knives were made by each applicant that are the height of their work. These knives were judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. The Texan is one of the knives that John chose to represent his work.
As you would expect, the fit and finish is exceptional. The Damascus steel blade was forged to shape from 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. The clip has been fully sharpened. On the left, John's mark ("Horrigan, J.S."). On the right side is "2005". O1 carbon steel was forged into a sculpted S-guard and fittings and nitre blued to a deep black. The handle has been meticulously sculpted from pre-ban elephant ivory and shows off a perfect fluting. The fluting nicely shows the grain structure inherent to the pristine elephant ivory. A true masterpiece.
