Description: Coming back from the Blade show with mastersmith test knives is one of my great highlights of the year. In 2005, four new mastersmiths joined the ranks. Five knives were made by each applicant that are the height of their work. These knives were judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. The Ranger is one of the knives that John chose to represent his work.
As you would expect, the fit and finish is exceptional. The 1084 carbon steel blade was forged to shape. A clay heat treatment resulted in two distinct differential tempering lines and a beautiful carbide structure that is just visible in the surface. Both the blade and full tang have been distal tapered, resulting in an optimal balance. Exhibition grade desert ironwood scales have been sculpted for a perfect feel in the hand. A true masterpiece.
