Description: Dew (Ryuichi) Hara is the adult son of renowned knifemaker Koji Hara. Dew grew up in a knife family and naturally got involved with the knifemaking by helping his father and learning his techniques. After working in his father's workshop for over 20 years and completing an apprenticeship with Anthony Marfione, Dew decided to create his own knives.
This Ray Flipper is among Dew's masterworks to date. The blade is hand ground Bohler M390 stainless steel. M390 is a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds onto it due to a high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. Its unique powder metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The blade features a highly polished blue titanium coating.
The blade is perfectly centered and can be opened easily using ambidextrous flipper tab. It has silky-smooth, drop-shut action thanks to the ball bearing pivot.
The handle features copper scales finished in a color Dew calls Irosabi Blue. The handle is engraved with a turtle and crane motif. 24K gold, platinum, and copper leaf is used to elegantly highlight the engraving. The turtle and crane are often seen in East Asian folklore - representing longevity and a prosperous, enduring life. The crane, often associated with the heavens and immortality, and the turtle, a symbol of the earth and long life, together embody a wish for a very long and happy existence. This pairing is also a common motif in Feng Shui practices. 420 stainless steel liners are hand textured on the flats and jewel polished in the interior. The copper backbar is pierced to allow the addition of a lanyard. The pivot and screws are titanium coated to match the blade. The 3D machined and anodized titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry. The clip is engraved with Dew's touchmark and “1 of 1”.
The knife is accompanied by a soft protective pouch and a branded box.
Excellent work throughout!
