Description: Kershaw’s founder, Pete Kershaw, knew the importance of guaranteed quality – as an outdoorsman, he often used knives for hunting and fishing. In late 1974, he decided to start his own knife company at a cement plant in Lake Oswego, Oregon. On the other side of the world, Kai had been crafting bladed tools for over 65 years and was known for its quality. Then-president Saijiro Endo II was focused on exporting Kai products to other countries, including the American market. Kershaw and Kai’s paths converged, and the two have been linked since.
The Kershaw Fatback (1935) does not get its name from an oversized handle or blade, but from the aggressive “fat” texturing for a positive grip. The black glass-filled nylon handle is comfortable and drilled on both sides, top and bottom to support the deep carry pocket clip in tip-up or down orientation for either hand. The blade opens using Kershaw’s assisted opening technology, simply pulling down on the flipper tab kicks the blade open and locks into place in one swift, clean motion. Full steel liners support the mounting hardware and give the knife strength. Open back construction keeps weight in check and makes cleaning a breeze.
The black oxide coated blade is 8Cr13MoV stainless steel. The name of the steel simply refers to the elements it contains: .8% Carbon, 13% chromium and small additions of molybdenum and vanadium. It is most similar to AUS-8. The modified drop point blade gives a more dagger-like appearance, while still being sharp on only one side.
Kershaw Knives carry a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. Some services are free like sharpening, body screws and pocket clips, and some services like blade replacements are available for a fee. Further information can be found on Kershaw’s website.
