Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010 when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically-inspired piece.
This Coffin Dagger shows Rucus' excellent skills at their best. The combination of materials and finishes provides a canvas that tells an age old story.
The blade is hand ground 1070 carbon steel with an antiqued finish. Rucus borrowed a technique from Japanese swords and gave the blade a clay zone heat treatment. The line (called a hamon) that travels along the blade shows the transition between the softer, resilient center and the keen, long lasting cutting edge. The blade is ground with perfect symmetry. Coetzee's touchmark is on the ricasso.
The coffin style handle is dyed and stabilized curly maple, secured to the hidden tang using brass pins surrounded by copper collars. The contoured handle provides a comfortable grip. Coined brass spacers and a copper oval guard finish the handle.
A hand stitched leather sheath is included to protect the dagger when not in use.
Excellent work throughout!
