Description: Paul DiStefano is a bladesmith from Staten Island, New York. He has been making knives full time since 2017 and received his Mastersmith rating with the American Bladesmith Society in December of 2024. His knives are hand forged with a hammer and anvil. His style of work is immediately recognizable and he will likely become one of the "greats". This Integral Mosaic Damascus Kard is an excellent example of his exceptional work! It was made just shortly before receiving his Mastersmith award.
The kard is a dagger style that was prominent in Persia, Turkey, Armenia and all the way to India. Mostly used in the 18th century and earlier, this style of knife would be worn on the left side of the belt. While often used for utility tasks, it was also often used as a thrusting weapon, designed to penetrate chainmail.
The blade is forged from Paul's own eucalyptus leaf mosaic damascus, combining 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The unique pattern is highly detailed and mesmerizing. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. Paul's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The bolster is integral to the blade. This takes a particularly skilled bladesmith to create in a custom setting and results in superior strength and durability. The bolster was highly sculpted by hand.
The handle is African blackwood. African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is among the most dense, durable woods in the world and is highly prized for its jet black appearance. The handle was carved by hand into a eucalyptus leaf motif to provide a positive grip. This knife could easily be the center of any serious knife collection.
Excellent work throughout!
