Description: Bladesmith Kevin Slattery hails from Australia. I was very excited when Mastersmith Bill Burk introduced me to his work back in 2018. His work has continued to develop and refine over the years and he is clearly a maker to watch.
Slicing knives are a perfect choice for precise cuts in the kitchen, effortlessly portioning roasts and other meats. The long, thin blade allows you to slice with one long stroke, instead of sliding the knife back and forth in a sawing motion. The result is a superior, clean cut.
The blade is forged from W2 carbon steel to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The spine and choil are nicely rounded for comfort. Kevin's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The blade features a revolutionary technique that Kevin has developed called Hamon Art. Images of a flaming skull are depicted by creating a detailed hamon (differential heat treatment) in the form of the images, rather than just a surface technique. The results of this new technique are exceptionally dramatic. Both the images and Kevin’s maker mark were created using this technique.
The Japanese inspired oval handle combines ancient bog oak with a black Juma spacer. This wood has been buried in a bog for hundreds or sometimes thousands of years. The extremely low oxygen conditions of the bog protect the wood from normal decay, while the underlying peat provides acidic conditions where iron salts and other minerals react with tannins in the wood, gradually giving it a distinct dark brown to almost black color. Like other knives, this knife should not be put in the dishwasher.
Excellent work throughout!
