The Rum Runner is a heavy duty axe inspired by the naval boarding axes that were used between the 16th and 19th centuries. They were used during the Age of Sail, when ships had to get close enough to each other to use their short-range artillery. Boarding axes were a key part of a man-of-war's inventory, along with other weapons like grenades, pistols, blunderbusses, muskets, bayonets, and cutlasses. Prior to any possible boarding action, various objects shot from your opponent’s cannon were also designed to bring down your ship’s masts and rigging, creating dangerous debris on your deck or a sea anchor dragging behind and hampering mobility. Masses of ropes and canvas needed to be cleared and the curved blade of the boarding axe helped cut these masses effectively. The rear spike grabbed into tangles and with its long shaft, gave needed leverage to quickly drag debris away. In addition to being used as a formidable weapon and irreplaceable tool, boarding axes were often used as a fire suppression tool on board, from breaking open doors and roofs to release smoke to removing hot shot ready to start a new fire. Simply put, a boarding axe was seen as one of the most valuable tools still recognizable today on any fire truck.
The Rum Runner features a 3.2 inch cutting edge and measures 6-1/2 inches from the edge to the back of the spike. The base of the haft to the top of the head measures at approximately 12-3/4 inches. Maple handle scales are set on the full tang. The axe is long enough to deliver an effective blow but short enough to be carried on the belt.
A Kydex sheath is included to safely carry the axe.
Excellent work throughout!
