Description: Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. In 1978, they settled in Golden, Colorado, and initially, the company focused on selling their first product: the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker™ which was primarily sold at fairs and trade shows around the country. Since then, Spyderco has steadily grown to become one of the leaders in the cutlery industry. In addition to a worldwide distribution network and manufacturing resources in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China, their innovations have earned them an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards.
The Sage 5 (C123GPCBL) is among Spyderco’s Sage Series, a unique family of knives that showcases the innovative lock mechanisms that have helped define modern folding knife technology. Every knife in the series features the same basic design parameters — a full-flat-ground, leaf-shaped blade, an ergonomic handle design with textured forefinger choil and thumb ramp, and a reversible, tip-up wire clip. A portion of the sale (5%) of every Sage Series folder is also donated to the National Alzheimer’s Association of Denver, Colorado. This version of the Sage 5 boasts cobalt blue G-10 and CPM-SPY27 blade steel. The compression lock located on the back of the handle is incredibly strong and allows the user to keep their fingers out of the path of the blade while closing the knife. While very similar to the Para3 family of Spyderco knives, the Sage 5 has snappier detent and slimmer handle scales.
The blade is satin finished CPM-SPY27 stainless steel. This steel was developed by Spyderco and produced by Crucible Industries, having a very similar chemical composition to the tried-and-true VG-10. Additional cobalt, nitrogen, niobium and vanadium give the steel increased toughness and wear resistance. The particle metallurgy process amplifies these qualities by managing grain size and providing uniform chemical distribution. A full flat grind gives the blade a remarkably sharp edge, perfect for slicing tasks.
Made in Taiwan.
