Description: Des Horn makes knives that have an intrinsic harmony. This elegant gent's flipper shows Horn's work at its best. Des is one of the fathers of the South African knife industry. His influence can be clearly seen in other South African's work, but also extends into knives made around the world. Whether put to a daily carry folder or an art knife, his attention to detail and skill is legendary. Des had the honor of being named one of the 25 greatest living knifemakers in the world in the Spring of 2021.
This Thiers gent's flipper has handles of ancient woolly mammoth ivory with rare deep green tones. The combination of stainless damascus, anodized titanium and ancient ivory is exceptionally dramatic.
The 3-3/4 inch long, slender blade is hand ground Damacore. DC18N Damacore is a powder metallurgy-based steel with three different alloys. The center core consists of N11X, a high nitrogen steel with distinctive properties. N11X is a PM high nitrogen steel with most of the carbon substituted by nitrogen. This gives N11X a combination of hardness, wear resistance, ductility, and corrosion resistance, going well beyond standard steels. The dramatic blade is not only high performing, but it is stunning! To get the keenest, longest lasting edge, Des hardens the blade then cryogenically quenches it in liquid nitrogen four times. Finally, it is triple tempered for durability.
Rare green toned mammoth ivory handle scales are set on anodized titanium liners. Colors develop in the ancient ivory as minerals moved into the ivory across thousands of years. Green tones are particularly uncommon and desirable. The scales meet perfectly with stainless damascus bolsters in an elegant S-curve. Des hardens his bolsters to make them more scratch resistant. The grade V titanium liners surround a stainless damascus backbar.
The front flipper opener is easy to use -- it is designed for easy single handed opening and closing rather than a 'flicking' flipper. The blade is perfectly centered and has smooth, consisten action.
The knife is accompanied by a black leather pocket pouch.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
