Description: This Forged Coffin Bowie is an exceptional example of Raymond Richard's work. It has an elegance and timeless sense to it that wouldn't be out of place by the side of an American pioneer, bravely breaking ground in a new land. It captures the spirit of a time gone by - yet has the excellence one expects from a contemporary knifemaker. This incredible knife shows exactly what Raymond is capable of. It is among his master works to date! This bowie was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Raymond could have made it yesterday!
The clip point blade is hand forged W2 carbon steel. Raymond borrowed a technique from Japanese swords and gave the blade a clay zone heat treatment. The line (called a hamon) that travels along the blade shows the transition between the softer, resilient spine and the keen, long lasting cutting edge. Raymond's touchmark is on left side of the blade.
The Coffin handle is stabilized curly koa. Curly koa (Acacia koa) is only found on the Hawaiian islands and is one of the most desired exotic woods used in knifemaking. The presentation grade wood used has a dense, curly figure and lots of chatoyance. The guard and rear bolster are forged to shape from antique wrought iron, likely recovered from an antique wagon wheel or anchor. The unique texture wrought iron provides gives the knife an old-world feel. A lanyard can be added to the rear using the wrought iron ring.
A custom wooden sheath is included to protect the knife. The sheath combines curly koa with African blackwood. A wrought iron ring gives you different options available to carry the knife on a belt or bag.
Excellent work throughout!`
