Description: Before Benchmade's rise to become the company we know today, they focused primarily on butterfly or balisong knives. Founder Les deAsis began building handmade custom Bali-Songs in the 1980s. The success of these custom Bali’s spurred the creation of the first production Bali-Song: The model 68. Benchmade Knife Company was born in 1987, driven to produce products in the US with a strong commitment to quality and customer relationships. Today, Benchmade continues to focus on innovation, customer needs, and responsible business ethics to bring the highest quality products to the world’s elite.
This Benchmade Morpho 51 was kept in a private collection and but appears never to have been carried or used to cut. The knife does not include the original box, though does have its Benchmade storage bag. This model is no longer in production and is rarely seen on the secondary market.
The Morpho 51 was a larger version of the Benchmade Balisong 32. Black G-10 scales sit on top of titanium liners. Cut-outs in the G-10 expose the jewel polishing on the flats of the titanium liners. Small steel weights at the end of both handles give a pleasant heft when manipulating the knife or performing tricks. A latch system can lock the handles together in either the closed or open position, keeping the knife safe in the pocket or fully open while using the blade. The titanium pocket clip is mounted for tip up carry for either hand. It was stonewashed then anodized. The pivot system runs on phosphor bronze washers for smooth, consistent action even after years of use.
The spear point blade is D2 semi-stainless steel with a stonewash finish. D2 provides excellent edge holding and toughness while still being relatively easy to care for. Keeping the blade dry is usually enough to protect from corrosion, but a high quality oil like camellia oil will further protect the blade in humid environments or when near salty ocean air. The blade is saber ground, giving a strong tip section for piercing and a large flat for slicing tasks.
