Description: This exceptional Sami hunter was made by Niilá Omma (b. 1992) of Skellefteå, Sweden. Niilá has made a name for himself as a traditional Sami craftsman and more recently as an actor in the Netflix film Stolen. Omma’s family comes from the area around Karesuando, but was forcibly relocated (like so many other Sami) during the 20th century. The Sami are a migratory people from Northern Scandinavia. Reindeer herding and traditional craft continue to be an important part of Sami culture today.
When he was 21 years old, Niilá was visiting with his grandparents, helping with the reindeer. In the evenings, his grandfather took him out to the workshop and showed him traditional Sami craft skills. He was immediately hooked and that fall, Omma started at the Sami education center in Jokkmokk, where he took the two-year course in wood and reindeer horn work.
The blade is stainless damascus forged by Damasteel in Sweden. This high performing stainless damascus is created using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing to provide excellent edge retention and unmatched beauty. The blade was ground by renowned Swedish knifemaker Tobbe Lundstrom. Tobbe was a protégé of Jonny Walker Nillsson and a close friend of Mattias Styrefors. The blade features a Scandi grind, which is preferred by many bushcrafters.
The handle combines birch burl with reindeer antler. It is beautifully contoured for a secure, comfortable grip. The end of the handle culminates in a reindeer antler butt cap.
The knife is accompanied by a traditional Sami sheath. The lower section is matching birch burl. The upper is rawhide with a twisted reindeer leather swinger loop. This style of sheath is particularly comfortable to wear since it moves out of the way when sitting down.
Exceptional work throughout from a great traditional craftsman.
