Description: The Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife is a double-edged dagger with a foil grip. It was developed by William Ewart Fairbairn and Eric Anthony Sykes in Shanghai based on ideas developed while serving on the Shanghai Municipal Police in China before World War II. It was made famous during World War II when issued to British Commandos, the Airborne Forces, the SAS and many other units, especially for the Normandy landings in June 1944.
The blade is hand ground from Bjormans Twist pattern damascus forged by Damasteel in Sweden. This high performing damascus is created using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing to provide excellent edge retention and unmatched beauty. The blade is perfectly ground. Daggers are among the hardest knives to grind -- any flaw in symmetry becomes immediately noticeable.
The handle is checkered bronze with a bronze Cerakote finish. The oval guard is Gibeon meteorite inlaid with 24K gold. The Gibeon meteorite landed in Great Namaqualand, Namibia, Africa. It radio carbon dates to over 4 billion years ago. Gibeon fragments are spread over one of the largest strewn fields in the world, measuring 70 miles wide by 230 miles long and have a distinctive pattern known as the Widmanstatten pattern, which is one of the richest and most distinct patterns found in meteorites. The crystalline patterns can only form in the vacuum of space. The large metallic crystals require millions of years of cooling to form from a molten planetary core fragment. It has been estimated that it took about 1000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree Celsius! The handle is finished with a matching Gibeon meteorite pommel also inlaid with 24K gold. This dagger uses take-down construction. The pommel can be twisted to disassemble the dagger. This allows the knife to be taken apart if maintenance is ever needed.
This Fairbairn-Sykes Style Dagger is accompanied by a black leather sheath -- also very true to the original design.
Exceptional work throughout!
