Description: This Frontier Style Spontoon Hawk is an exceptional example of Raymond Richard's unique work. It has an elegance and timeless sense to it that wouldn't be out of place by the side of an American pioneer, bravely breaking ground in a new land. It captures the spirit of a time gone by - yet has the excellence one expects from a contemporary knifemaker.
The spontoon hawk was a modification on the half-pike formerly borne by inferior officers of the British infantry, and used in giving signals to the soldiers. It features a blade designed for piercing, rather than chopping like most tomahawks. It can deliver lethal puncture wounds and is a formidable weapon. The head is hand forged from carbon steel recovered from a truck leaf spring. The head was forged closely to shape, ensuring optimal grain refinement. A forged, antiqued finish gives the axe an heirloom appearance. Raymond's touchmark is on the left side of the head. The fittings around the head are antique wrought iron.
The large haft is antiqued oak. The haft is painted to resemble a bird’s head. The base of the haft is wrapped in leather for a comfortable grip.
Excellent work throughout!
