Description: This frontier bowie knife is an exceptional example of Raymond Richard's work. It has an elegance and timeless sense to it that wouldn't be out of place by the side of an American pioneer, bravely breaking ground in a new land. It captures the spirit of a time gone by - yet has the excellence one expects from a contemporary knifemaker.
The blade is hand forged 5160 carbon steel and features a differential heat treatment which provides an ultra-hard cutting edge with a soft and supportive spine. 5160 carbon steel is highly revered for its ability to hold an excellent edge coupled with good toughness and chip resistance. The blade is convex ground with a distal tapered spine. Raymond's touchmark is on the spine of the blade.
The osage orange handle has nice warm tones. It is surrounded by an antiqued wrought iron guard and finial. The handle has been nicely contoured to provide a secure, comfortable grip.
To keep the knife close at hand, Ray has made a playful sheath wet formed from rawhide. The single-seamed precision-made sheath is inspired by Scandinavian sheaths.
Excellent work throughout!
