Description: This Mediterranean Dirk was made by Mastersmith James Rodebaugh. It was kept in a private collection since it was made and is in new condition. By all appearances, James could have made it yesterday! It’s quite rare to see one of Rodebaugh's knives on the secondary market and his wait time is currently several years!
The blade is hand forged 1084 carbon steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. 1084 carbon steel offers excellent edge holding and chip resistance. James borrowed his heat treatment technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coated in clay. This insulates the spine, keeping the back soft and supportive while the cutting edge is keen and long lasting. The undulating heat treatment line is called a gunome hamon. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. James' touchmark is on the left side of the blade. Because the knife is forged from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to oil the blade and natural wood handle.
The handle is presentation grade Arizona desert ironwood (Olneya tesota), contoured to provide a comfortable grip. Ironwood is a rare wood that is only found in the valleys of the Sonoran Desert below 2,500 foot elevation. It is among the most desirable of exotic woods used for knives. A fluted nickel ferrule seals the front of the handle.
Excellent work throughout!
