Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010 when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically inspired piece.
This Hunter/Utility Knife is hand forged 1070 carbon steel, A differential heat treatment ensures a keen, long lasting edge with a softer, supportive spine. 1070 carbon steel is an exceptional, resilient hard use tool steel that combines edge holding with chip resistance. Coetzee's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is South African black ironwood (Olea capensis sub sp. macrocarpa). Black ironwood grows mainly in the Tsitsikamma forests around Knysna. With a Janka hardness of over 13000N, it can be a difficult timber to work, but it is very durable and extremely strong. The variegated color resembles Wild Olive (it comes from the same genus) and provides a stunning, dramatic figure. Both the blade and full tang are distal tapered.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled brown leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
