Description: Wayne Goddard started making knives in the 1960’s. He was a full time knifemaker by 1963. Wayne continued making knives and started writing and teaching others how to make knives. He wrote the Question & Answer column for Blade Magazine for many years. His renowned book, The $50 Knife Shop taught countless knifemakers to make their first knife longer before the internet existed. He was a longtime member of The Knifemakers Guild and an ABS Mastersmith. Inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 2013. He worked in his shop with his son Steve for about three years from 2013 – 2016. Wayne passed away in 2018.
In 1976, Wayne made this folding patch knife for himself -- though Wayne was eventually talked into selling this personal knife to a private collector later that year. The knife is accompanied by a note, handwritten on the back of his business card by Goddard in 2003, providing excellent provenance:

Folding Patch Knife (Muzzleloading).
I made it for myself, but sold it
to ( . . .) for his collection.
That was 1976. Etching was done
by myself. Blade made of Sandvik
bandsaw steel. Elk Antler Handle.
Brass Bolsters. It's the only one I made.

A patch knife is a small, specialized knife primarily used to cut cloth or leather patches that are wrapped around rifle balls to ensure a tight fit in the barrel. These "ordnance patches" were essential for accuracy and gas sealing in muzzle-loading firearms.
The 3-1/2 inch clip point blade is Sandvik bandsaw steel. The blade is convex ground and razor sharp. Wayne's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. The blade can be opened easily using the left-side nail nick.
Elk handle scales are set on polished brass liners. The scales are fit to a polished brass bolster engraved by Wayne. The engraving on the blade an bolsters was meant to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. The lightly contoured handle provides a comfortable grip with no hot spots. A lanyard can be added to the rear of the knife for extra retention.
This is a particularly rare find. Excellent work throughout!
