Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quite his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching knifemaking classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019.
Stuart hand forged this massive 15 inch bowie blade from his own cross hatch pattern damascus, combining 1090 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. It is high contrast, extremely detailed, and shows tremendous skill at the forge. The spine features a long clip that stops just short of being fully sharpened. Stuart's touchmark is on the right side and his J.S. mark is on the left side.
The coffin handle is hand contoured presentation grade two-tone amboyna burl, combining sapwood and heartwood. The wood has a swirling figure that nicely complements the damascus blade. The nickel silver guard is brought to a high polish and features coined hand filework. The large matching spacer is fluted and stippled for an elegant finish. A satin finished escutcheon is set onto the right side of the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a cowhide and ostrich shin leather sheath is included. The sheath is custom built by Michelle, Stuart's wife and is as artistic and well performed as the knife itself.
Excellent work throughout!
