Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became a Journeyman Smith in June 2019.
The blade is forged from Stuart's own twist pattern damascus, combining 1070 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent toughness and edge holding. The high contrast pattern is extremely engaging. The razor sharp blade features a Scandi grind which is preferred for bushcrafting and outdoor use knives. Stuart's touchmark is on the right side of the blade. His JS mark is on the left.
The handle is sculpted from rare red ivory burl. The swirling figure of the wood nicely complements the damascus blade. Large spacers of faux ivory are surrounded by stacked black fiber and nickel silver spacers. A hammer textured nickel silver guard completes the handle.
To protect the knife during transportation, a traditional Scandinavian style leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
