Description: Willem O'Kelly is a custom knifemaker from the Great Karoo desert region of South Africa. Willem's brand name: K'roo Custom Blades derives its name from the Great Karoo. The locals pronounce Karoo with the 'a' silent, so it is pronounced much like 'crew' in English. Willem started making knives as hobby in 2005. He was a professional hunter and so mostly made hunting knives and rustic knives for black powder hunters and re-enactors. His love for slipjoint and backlock folders became his passion and today these make up the vast majority of knives he makes.
The blade on this Ettrick Swayback Wharncliffe Slipjoint Folder is hand ground RWL-34 stainless steel. A flat grind ensures effortless cutting. RWL-34 is a premium powder metallurgy cutlery steel manufactured by ERASTEEL in Söderfors, Sweden. Because it is manufactured from rapidly solidified powders, the microstructure of the steel is much more uniform. This gives the steel much higher strength and durability while maintaining very high wear resistance. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality to Willem' work.
Extremely rare vintage Westinghouse canvas Micarta handle scales are set on 304 stainless steel liners. Thin black fiber liners nicely complement the scales. The left scale is inlaid with a mamba fang stainless steel escutcheon. The contoured handle is very comfortable in hand.
This folder is nicely timed with a firm half-stop. The action throughout is smooth and consistent.
The knife is accompanied by a leather slip pocket pouch for easy carry.
Exceptional work throughout!
