Description: Joanne Wright is a young, female bladesmith currently apprenticing under fellow South African bladesmith Stuart Smith. Joanne has also taken forging courses at renowned bladesmith school Heavin Forge taught by Mastersmith Kevin Harvey and Mastersmith Heather Harvey. In addition to bladesmithing, Joanne has a passion for martial arts which often comes across in her work. We are excited to offer her work on BladeGallery.
This knife was inspired by the knife used by the Kruger National Park's first game ranger, Harry Wolhuter. Wolhuter used the knife in 1903 to kill a lion that attacked him while on patrol in the park. His memories of this event (along with others) can be read in his autobiography, Memories of a Game Ranger.
The 5-1/2 inch spear point blade is hand forged 5160 carbon steel. It was forged closely to shape, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. A hand rubbed satin finish adds an heirloom quality to the blade. Joanne's mark is on the left side.
South African wild olive (Olea europeae sub sp. Africana) handle scales are secured to the full tang using four brass pins. The tang is distal tapered, providing excellent balance in hand. The contoured handle fills your hand and is very comfortable.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand stitched and tooled leather custom sheath made by Joanne is included.
Excellent work throughout!
