Description: Dwight Towell's (b. 1934) work is legendary for its precision and artistry. Towell is a long standing member of the prestigious Art Knife Invitational (AKI). Among his numerous awards was the Governor's Award for Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts, which he received in 2010.
This sole authorship Engraved Mother of Pearl Utility with Gold Inlay shows off his work at its best. It has been in a single collection and has been meticulously cared for. It has never been used to cut and has not been sharpened since it was first created. By all appearances, both the knife and sheath could have been made yesterday.
The Towells have ranched in the Midvale, Idaho area since his great grandfather, Alexander Towell, homesteaded there in 1881. Dwight and his wife, Celia, ranched and raised their family less than a mile from his great grandfather’s homestead. He made his first knife, a hunting knife for his son, in 1966. In 2004 Towell retired from raising cattle hay and alfalfa — his son-in-law handles the ranching now — to devote himself full-time to knifemaking.
Dwight starts by drawing a design on paper. Then he outlines the knife’s shape with a carbide-tipped scriber on a bar of steel and cuts it with a bandsaw. That’s followed by grinding and sanding with ever finer sandpaper, ending with a hand-rubbed finish. Towell engraves the knives with help from a microscope and air-driven engraver tools.
The hollow ground drop point blade shows perfect curves with elegant, crisp grind lines. It was meticulously hand satin finished for a silky-smooth appearance.
The stainless steel bolster meets presentation grade whitelip mother of pearl in an elegant S-curve. The bolsters are engraved and surrounded by a 24k gold border. The pearl is set to the distal tapered full tang using four stainless pins.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched tooled custom leather sheath -- also made by Towell.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
