Description: David Banks is a long time friend of Audra Draper. Starting making knives in 1993, he apprenticed under Mastersmith Ed Fowler with Mastersmith Audra Draper (then an apprentice). In fact, he recalled a story to me of when he was working in Ed Fowler's shop and Audra came in for the first time. He assisted her in a jewelry project, which eventually got her interested in knifemaking.
This exceptional hunter clearly shows the influence of Ed Fowler's teaching. It has been in a private collection since it was made in the spring of 1993. It was one of the original knives that Banks made under Ed Fowler's watchful eye. It has been well cared for and is in near-new condition.
The blade was forged closely to shape and is 5160 carbon steel. This is the steel that Fowler was using prior to moving to 52100 carbon steel. 5160 provides a keen, long lasting edge that is exceptionally resilient. The blade features a hand rubbed satin finish.
The handle combines crown stag, Dymondwood and synthetic ivory spacers. Alternating fiber and brass liners assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. There is a small check in one of the synthetic ivory spacers which appears to be stable. The handle is completed with a Fowler-style brass bolster.
This knife is accompanied by its original pouch style leather sheath.
Excellent work throughout!
