Description: Jim Poor is an award winning farrier that has recently crossed over into knifemaking. His work is exceptional and shows the skill brought from many years in front of the forge. Jim joined the American Farrier's Association in 1984 and was the first American to win the International Farrier Competition in Stoneleigh, England. He has participated numerous times in the World Championship Blacksmiths' Competition in Calgary, Canada. Jim was inducted into the International Hoof-Care Summit Hall of Fame in 2014. He is also a well known toolmaker and has conducted many farrier clinics across the United States and Canada.
This "Little Fighter" by Jim shows his exceptional skill as a bladesmith. The complex Turkish Twist damascus is forged from 1080 and 15n20 carbon steels to provide exceptional toughness and edge holding. Four bars of twisted steel were set in opposing directions and combined into the highly controlled Turkish Twist pattern. The large blade shows off the intricate pattern perfectly. Jim's mark is set on the left ricasso.
The handle is ancient walrus ivory. The complex damascus nicely accentuates the subtle dappled tapioca from the interior of the ancient walrus tusk. A large spacer is hand forged damascus. The guard and pommel are forged and blued wrought iron. A custom screw in the pommel allows the knife to be disassembled if cleaning and maintenance are needed. Take-down construction requires tighter tolerances and shows Poor's focus on the smaller details. The thin profile handle fills out the hand nicely and is very comfortable.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather sheath is included.
Exceptional work throughout!
