Description: Mastersmith Shane Taylor is best known for one-of-a-kind art knives, with an emphasis on pictorial mosaic damascus and highly engraved art knives. His unique vision is influenced by steam punk and gothic aethetics.
A push dagger is a small knife with a "T" shaped handle, designed to be grasped in the hand so that the blade protrudes from the front of a fist, typically between the 2nd and 3rd fingers. The push dagger has a colorful history - it is believed to have originated on the Indian subcontinent, being brought west by the British. As the empire spread (and crumbled), push daggers gained favor among riverboat gamblers in Mississippi as a boot knife, and eventually found their home in the vest of gentlemen in the San Francisco gold rush. They were also popular with early American law enforcement officials. The push dagger is a unique combination of weapon and art -- a gentleman gambler's last assurance in a bygone year.
The 5.4 inch blade combines three separate bars of damascus steel. Twist pattern edge bars surround a complex mosaic damascus center. The blade immediately grabs attention. Very few bladesmiths can make damascus patterns this intricate with very little distortion in the pattern. Because the knife is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to oil the blade and natural walrus ivory handle. Shane's maker's mark is inlaid in 24K gold.
The handle is ancient walrus ivory, surrounded by a mosaic damascus ferrule and pommel.
This exceptional one-of-a-kind push dagger is accompanied by a Victorian era presentation box. The wood box, which is approximately 150 years old, features detailed inlays and is locked with a key. It is padded to safely hold the push dagger.
Exceptional!
