Description: I was tremendously pleased to meet bladesmith Dave Skinner at the 2019 Guild Show of Southern Africa. Dave brings a refined eye and tremendous skill at the forge to his knives. Over the last few years, his work has continued to develop a level of refinement that is found in very few knifemakers.
Skinner began by forging out a billet of five layer damascus. This technique, borrowed from the world of Japanese knives, is called go mai (5 layers). A 1080 carbon steel core is surrounded by alternating layers of 15N20 and 1080 carbon steels. The head features an appleseed edge for high performance chopping.
The handle is formed from crosscut G-10, set on a distal tapered full tang. The handle is contoured for a sure, comfortable grip and is set with a hand domed pin.
The Hand Forged Go Mai Hatchet is accompanied by a custom leather sheath.
This hatchet could feel at home in any collection, though it will be a valued companion in any bugout bag or on any excusion into the woods. Exquisite work throughout!
