Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. Andrew received his MFA in Blacksmithing/Metalsmithing at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. A 2014 SNAG Early Career Artist Presenter, he is currently an instructor and resident artist at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts. Andrew won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show awards at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show. A former Artist in Residence at The National Ornamental Metal Museum, he earned his Mastersmith certification from the American Bladesmithing Society in 2015. Andrew was the recipient of the B.R Hughes Award, given for the top piece submitted by a Mastersmith candidate. He is an artist that inspires many other knifemakers and is among my favorite knifemakers today.
Andrew hand forged the the blade, beginning with 1084 and 15n20 carbon steels. He combined a mosaic Ws pattern in the middle bar with outside bars of composite W's twists with a core of 15n20 carbon steel. The blade is one of the most impressive examples of bladesmithing skills that I have ever seen. The center of the blade features a draamtic fuller. One side of the ricasso is inlaid with a meticulously carved fine silver frog. The frog's eye is inlaid with 24k gold for accent. The reverse ricasso features Andrew's maker's mark.
The organically carved handle is formed from ebony. The carving is perfectly done with a tremendous high polish. Fine silver accents highlight the carving. The quillion and pommel are formed from parkerized mild steel. The end of the pommel is decorated with carved fine silver lilypads.
This dagger is accompanied by a hand stitched caiman leather sheath.
Absolutely spectacular. This is one of those knives where the photos can't do it justice.
