Description: Award winning knifemaker Mastersmith Kevin Harvey is well known for his tremendous attention to detail -- only matched by his skill at design. This Coffin Handled Bowie is a truly exceptional knife and shows his skills as a bladesmith.
The 10-1/2 inch blade was forged to shape from 1050 carbon steel. Kevin began with a decommisioned train track rail that was tested and confirmed to be 1050 carbon steel. The blade was forged in a tight temperature range, with numerous short heating cycles. This created a damascene pattern, despite being a mono-steel blade. A differential heat treatment provides a strong, supportive spine and ultra-hard, keen cutting edge. The clip is fully sharpened. The blade culminates in a Spanish notch.
The handle features frame tang construction. Austrailian York gum burl (Eucalyptus loxophelba) handle scales surround a frame made from South African red bushwillow (Combretm apiculatum). The combination of exotic woods is particularly dramatic. The guard, thong tube and pins are formed from nickel silver.
This knife is accompanied by a custom leather sheath decorated with triangular basketweave tooling and a concho.
Exceptional work throughout!
