Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. This knife is truly a one-of-a-kind piece and is one of Jonny's masterpieces. It has been in a private collection since it was made in 2007. It has been meticulously cared for and by all appearances Jonny could have made it yesterday. It has become extremely rare to find one of Jonny Walker Nilsson's Sami Style Half Horn Knives on the US Market.
The complex damascus blade was forged to shape by renowned Swedish bladesmith Mattias Styrefors. Over the years, Mattias and Jonny became great friends. Styrefors even taught Walker to forge, though Jonny continued to make nearly all his knives with blades made by Mattias. The hat colored blade was forged from carbon steels. A firecracker pattern edge and spine surround the mosaic damascus central bar.
The handle is very traditional for the Sami style knife and has a slim oval shape that fits very comfortably into the hand. The reindeer antler in the handle has a slight gloss finish. The masur birch burl wood in the center of the handle has excellent grain structure and has a smooth oiled finish. The traditional Sami pattern on the sheath and handle is not scrimshaw, but hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder.
Jonny's sheaths have always been spectacular. A particularly large reindeer antler was necessary to be made into this sheath. Four pierced stars on the sheath allow the damascus blade to be seen when inserted. A second layer of engraved reindeer antler creates tremendous three dimensionality. Jonny's engraving is quite unique. His ability to change the size of the engraving is unrivaled. A top bent section of reindeer antler is unique to Walker's knives. The sheath is completed with a reindeer leather upper and a twisted reindeer leather belt loop with a reindeer antler bead.
This is one of the most impressive traditional Sami style half horn knives I have seen.
