Description: I was tremendously pleased to meet bladesmith Dave Skinner at the 2019 Guild Show of Southern Africa. Dave brings a refined eye and tremendous skill at the forge to his knives. This Fighter/Bowie is a tremendous example of his work.
The blade was forged to shape from W2 carbon steel, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. Skinner borrowed a technique from Japanese swords and gave the blade a clay zone heat treatment. The line (hamon) that travels along the blade shows the transition between the softer, resilient spine and the keen, long lasting cutting edge. The steel has a beautiful wootz-like grain structure.
The contoured, carved handle is formed from russet bushwillow burl (Combretum hereroense). The dramatic wood has a dark, twisted figure. It is perfectly contoured for a secure, non-slip grip. The guard is formed from antique wrought iron. A damascus ferrule is surrounded by coin fileworked spacers.
This bowie knife is accompanied by a custom leather sheath.
Exquisite work throughout!
