Description: Erich Vosloo was born in Thabazimbi, in the Northern Province of South Africa, in 1952. He qualified as a medical doctor at Pretoria University and is practicing medicine part time still today. He was inspired and taught by prominent makers Mastersmith Kevin Harvey and André Thorburn which guided him into making the high end art knives he makes today. Erich also attended jewelry making and goldsmithing courses which help him incorporate fine details into his knives that few can replicate. He currently specializes in making elegant art knives and gentleman’s folders that are one-off, unique, knives never to be created again.
This bird and trout is a spectacular display of elegant materials coming together in a refined, yet practical art knife. When coupled with the stunning display box and plaque, this knife is sure to be at the center of your collection, or your favorite thing to display on the desk. Given the tremendous skill level, it is no surprise that this knife won Best Bird & Trout at the 2019 Knifemakers' Guild of Southern Africa Show in Pretoria.
The 5-1/3 inch blade is made from high performing twist pattern Damasteel forged in Sweden. This premium stainless damascus is created using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing to provide excellent edge retention and unmatched beauty. The spine is rounded and the ricasso is elegantly carved to give unique flowing lines. Alternating 24K gold and fine silver domed pins are inlaid into the spine providing perfect thumb purchase. The distal tapered blade creates excellent balance that allows the knife to sit comfortably in the hand with little grip.
The handle is made from rare Muskox horn secured to the full tang using 24k gold pins. Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is an Arctic mammal of the family Bovidae. Muskoxen primarily live in Arctic North America and Greenland, with small populations in Sweden, Siberia and Norway. The world population is estimated at between 80,000 and 125,000. The convoluted, translucent figure is immediately captivating. Muskox is among the rarest handle material used by knifemakers today. Oval whitelip mother of pearl inlays are set into both sides of the handle.
The muskox scales nicely meet with stainless steel bolsters. The bolsters are deeply engraved and inlaid with 24kt gold accents by Julien Marchal. Belgium-born artist Marchal studied engraving and gun making at Léon Mignon Liège in Belgium and now lives in South Africa. The bolsters are secured using two gold pins. A matching stainless steel butt cap is also engraved by Julien and inlaid with 24K gold.
A custom tamboti wood presentation box hand built by Brian Coetzee is included. An inlaid magnet secures the lid safely shut. Erich's wife, Marianna, makes the inside cradle for the knife and hand fits the certificate of authenticity plaque to the inside of the lid.
Exceptional work throughout!
