Description: Visiting Journeyman Smith Neels van den Berg's workshop on a recent trip to South Africa with a real treat. His forge is pretty much in the middle of nowhere -- or at least if you kept driving down the road, that is clearly where it would end. The twisting road travels through veldt populated by zebra and other wild animals. Neels is well known for his war hammers, spike hawks, and highly refined knives.
This quillion dagger shows his skills at their best. It was inspired by 17th century Italian and French stilettos. The triangular blade was forged to shape from 1095 and 15n20 carbon steels. Each of the sides is hollow ground with three sharp edges and a very sharp tip. The break-away tip was particularly inspired by French stilettos. The blade culminates in a sculpted cylindrical base.
The handle is formed from antiqued bronze. It was hand carved with floral scroll detailing by Tiaan Burger. Tiaan, who lives in Pretoria, South Africa is a fourth generation artist-craftsman. He started knifemaking in 1997 and has studied blacksmithing, jewelry techniques and foundry work. His inspiration comes from the African veldt. Turned sections of polished bronze make a nice accent. This small stiletto makes a big impression.
This quilion stiletto is accompanied by a hand built custom presentation box by Brian Coetzee. Brian is an exceptional woodworker and associate member of the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern Africa.
Excellent work throughout!
