Description: This exceptional hunter is the handiwork of bladesmith Fred Ott. Fred's tremendous sense of design and skills at the forge clearly shine through on this knife.
The 6 inch blade was hand forged from 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels for a keen, long lasting edge. Fred combined three separate bars of damascus to form the blade. A central linear pattern is surrounded by a random pattern Damascus edge and a twist pattern damascus spine. The combination makes the blade grab attention from a distance and hold onto it upon closer examination.
The stacked handle combines ironwood with ebony and Steller's sea cow bone into a flowing design. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. Many believe that Steller's sea cow is the origin of mermaid myths. The handle has been nicely contoured so as to be both pleasing in the hand and to the eye. Fileworked nickel silver spacers bring contrast to the handle.
This masterpiece is accompanied by a hand tooled leather and basswood pouch style sheath.
An amazing addition to any collection or a prized knife for the outdoorsman that wants something unique.
