Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey teaches bladesmithing courses, with students travelling from all over the world to learn his techniques. Kevin uses the Heavin Forge mark on his knives when he creates a knife while demonstrating for his classes. This is one such knife.
The 7.4 inch clip point blade was hand forged from 1070 carbon steel. It was forged closely to shape, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. The blade was heat treated using a technique borrowed from Japanese swords. The spine was coated with clay prior to quenching. This results in a soft, supportive spine and keen, long lasting cutting edge. The gently undulating heat treatment line turns back so that the clip is fully hardened as well. A deep swedge travels along the length of the blade from the end of the ricasso and to the clip.
The handle is made from African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon). This jet black wood is among the densest and hardest woods in the world. The carved handle is fit perfectly to the nickel silver guard. The end of the handle culminates in a contoured, stippled ball.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched, basketweave tooled cowhide sheath.
