Description: Journeyman Smith Keith Fludder lives in New South Wales, Australia. He started making knives in 1989 is now a full time maker. Keith's knives are works of art that excel in performance. This bowie shows his exceptional skill at the forge.
The long, clip point, recurve blade was forged closely to shape beginning with a bar of W2 carbon steel. It features a distal taper for perfect balance. The clay zone heat treatment is borrowed from Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine of this large bowie knife was coated with clay. This acts as a heat sink and keeps the spine soft and supportive, while creating a keen, long lasting cutting edge. The undulating heat treatment line is called a hamon. As it approaches the tip, it turns back, allowing for the swedge to be fully hardened.
The handle is formed from lace sheoak burl (Allocasuarina spp.). This Australian wood is warm toned and has a dramatic figure. It is carved to swell at the palm, move into a slimmer waist, and swell again at the back of the handle. The S-guard and ferrule are made from high contrast mosaic damascus. The guard is particularly elegant, with a central 'explosion' radiating from where the blade enters the handle. The ferrule is surrounded by two thin copper spacers, highlighting warm tones in the stabilized wood.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
